Treasure Trove is packed to the brim with content and the different ways you can play through these games is wonderfully broad. Whether its co-op or solo, handheld or docked – it’s up to you. I don’t care. Just go play Shovel Knight.

Shovel Knight is one of the best indie games in the last few years, and this is the best edition so far. It also works great with the Switch concept, so if you have the new Nintendo console and you haven't played Shovel Knight yet, you shouldn't miss it.

While the original game was a fabulous romp, the Treasure Trove collection is more than worthy of investing some time into. Anyone who already has the original will obtain the upgraded package for free, but if bought separately, each of the three released campaigns should keep you entertained with great platforming that’s full of charm. With more stuff coming in the next year, the Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is worth its weight in gold.

Imagine in the glorious old times of NES that we'd have the chance of playing with a game that mix the jumping style of Ducktales, the cities from Zelda II, the map and secrets in the levels of Mario Bros. 3 and 8 enemies like in Mega Man, the magic weapons of Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania, and all the epic from the Sword & Sorcery Genre. All of them into the most complete Yacht Club Games creation.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is practically a must-own for anyone who has just picked up a Nintendo Switch. The expected excellent platforming fun, enjoyable storytelling, and impressive art and sound of all three campaigns not only comes all packed together in one title, but also includes better accessibility than ever before on a platform the title feels made for.

Sadly, I found later levels lost a lot of the game's early steam, as too much of the old "pixel perfect" platforming starts to creep in.

Not for the faint of heart. Brilliant, original platforming obstacles. Challenging and fun.

Shovel Knight is the only game I've bought three times just because I wanted to have it on everything, and plus the developers just deserveShovel Knight is the only game I've bought three times just because I wanted to have it on everything, and plus the developers just deserve it.

Retro pixelated indie games are a dime a dozen these days, and while familiarity may breed contempt, entries like Shovel Knight prove that that genre has bottomless potential. Based on a handful of classic 8 bit titles, Shovel Knight does so much more than emulate its predecessors. My favorite description of the game is that it isn't trying to recreate those old games, its trying to recreate the dream-like fond memories of the people who played them. In this way, it's got the best of both worlds, using modern smart game design choices to elevate the appeal of the simpler games of the past.

Visually, the game is consistently gorgeous given its art style. It may not blow people away if they aren't interested in the technicalities of pixel art, but the overall design and personality of the visuals is vibrant and compelling. The music is just incredible. Jake Kaufman's score is stunning and endlessly catchy. The main theme still gets stuck in my head from time to time, not to mention pretty much every other track. It's all just great stuff.

The gameplay is tight, responsive, and fun. What's amazing is, they've released two new games alongside the original, each with a completely different control scheme, and each is more satisfying and fun to play than the last. The fact that they are continuing to update the game after all this time with completely new modes and options is incredible and speaks to the character of the studio responsible for this masterpiece. So many kickstarter video games either crash and burn or just peter out without providing all the promised rewards. Yacht Club games is still letting anyone who bought a copy of the game download the DLC they've been working on for years for free. On top of that, the DLC is all fantastic.

You play as Shovel Knight, the knight who fights with a shovel. He's such a mainstay in the Video Game community at this point its easy to forget that wonderfully goofy premise. The story is simple but as a result its classic. The characters are memorable both for their strong designs and their delightful personalities. Playing through the game you go through large stages which leads up to a fight with one of the Order of No Quarter. Outside of those stages there's a small overworld map with a couple of towns, mini-stage challenges, and temporary challenges that wander around the map. So... they could have just had Shovel Knight go from stage to stage without missing much. There isn't that much to do in the overworld, but its inclusion just feels nice to have. It's more good stuff in a game that's exclusively good.

Difficulty wise I've heard different accounts from different people, but I'd say it's a solid approachable platformer that has a few tough spots near the end of the game. Mechanics are introduced and iterated upon within stages and you can always tell what went wrong if you died. Dying is also a little more interesting in this game, as lives are replaced with a money bag system. If you die you lose some money and it hangs out where you died. If you die again before you collect its gone for good and you lose more. This is one of those modern touches that elevates the game beyond its predecessors, using the sort of Dark Souls risk and reward method which raises the stakes of failure, but never kicks you back past your last checkpoint. The only thing I thought was brutally difficult about the game was on the second time through playing hard mode when you have to get through a boss rush with no healing items. That one was a pain, but everything else felt completely doable. It was engaging without being punishing.

I can't recommend the game enough, and I know I'm not the only one. There's a reason Shovel Knight is almost universally praised. There's a reason the community for it is still strong years later. There's a reason he's going to be the first Indie character in Super Smash Bros. Shovel Knight is a beacon of quality and goodwill. Like the knights he was inspired by, he is the paragon we look up to in times of darkness.

Plus you get to fight little rats in helicopter harnesses. Isn't that just amazing?
