If you loved Sonic Mania, Plus is an essential purchase. It’s more Sonic Mania, but different.

Taken as a full package this is arguably the best Sonic game there is. Mania mode is fun as ever, the cast is fuller, and the bonus challenges, unlockables, Encore mode and multiplayer makes for a game that earns its spot on the retail shelf. Some existing owners might wonder whether two extra characters, remixed singleplayer and revamped splitscreen is worth the upgrade given there's no substantially new levels to speak of, but I think it's a fine way to extend the experience.

Sonic Mania was already a fantastic title, and Sonic Mania Plus only makes things look and feel better.

Sonic Mania Plus is a return to form for Sega’s most iconic character. It takes all that is old and makes it new again.

Sonic Mania was a true return to form for the mascot, in his 2D 'Classic' guise at least, and celebrated the glory days of the original games while also enhancing their qualities and taking on new ideas. From new areas, imaginative second acts and some delightful boss encounters, the development team poured a lot of passion and talent into the project. Sonic Mania Plus takes that solid foundation and - in all honestly - doesn't do a great deal to mess with it. The new characters and modes are welcome, and there are some neat tweaks which iron out some of the kinks present in the original release, but on the whole this is an enhanced edition of the game rather than a feature-rich update. If you've still not sampled the delights of Sonic Mania then this is clearly the version to get, but if you're an existing owner then the low asking price of the DLC update make this well worth a look; we'll take any excuse to dive back into one of the best 2D platformers of recent memory.

It adds on neatly onto your original game (no need to start all over), and will extend your playtime at least another few hours if not more. Also, if you missed Sonic Mania last year, this is now the definitive version of the game. That said, if you just casually picked it up, and only invested a few hours, there isn’t that much here in Sonic Mania Plus to justify spending more money unless you’re a huge fan of Mighty and Ray.

    Pros
+ Feels exactly like classic Sonic games. Physics, sound effects, music, and quality while also adding great new elements and stages
    + Very re-playable
+ Encore more is a great excuse to play again with a slight twist

    Cons
    - Pinball bonus stage could use a little more work. Does not feel like any pinball stage from Sonic's past, and the ball doesn't move at all like you would expect.

The quality of the package in Mania Plus is so good that it is becoming one of the best, if not the best, Sonic game of all time.

Plus adds Encore Mode, Mighty and Ray and several tweaks (the Menu update and missing level transitions, which are already available free if you don't have plus) and more. Plus is $5 if you have the base game, which is a great price, and $30 to buy the entire physical package (comes with art-book, reversible cover, shiny reflective box cover) where the orignal base Digital copy was $20.

The game was perfect, but now it's even better. Sega is doing what they needed to do. Thank you.

Defiantly one of, if not the best Sonic games in recent years. What sonic 4 Episodes 1 and 2 got wrong, this game gets right.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Mania Plus and it's original game aren't one of the greatest things that happened in the series as several people think.
Firstly, I liked the game when I started to play it and how this game made such references to past Sonic games. I also enjoyed some of the surprises in it as well as how it worked as a retro game. I think it was a good idea for the franchise and that it was cool to bring back the classic Sonic to a starring role.
On the other part, after finishing the game, I didn't feel the game in the same way as when I played it. Before its release, I had no problem with the remade stages. Later, on the contrary, I realised this idea made a drop in quality to the game. It contains just a few original stages while the rest are taken from the Genesis titles, making it look more like a levels compilation than a completely original game. My most disliked ones where Green Hill Zone and Oil Ocean. In the first case because it's been so repetitive how they re-added this stage once and over again in the series that it loses its effect as an iconic level for it. In the second case because it's boring in both aesthetically and musically; its remade version doesn't convince me neither. On the positive said, my favourite ones were Flying Battery and Hidrocity, which I still love since I played them in the Genesis.
There is no much replayability at all, unless you want to beat the game with the different characters. You only have the Mean Bean Machine minigame, the Blue Sphere stages and the multiplayer. I liked these features but I think it could have been better if you added more to it like online matches.
The Plus edition didn't improve it a lot. You could add more interesting characters like the Chaotix or Amy Rose. Just because SegaSonic the Hedgehog became obscure and it was never re-released doesn't mean Mighty and Ray deserved to be playable. Some stages are unbalanced with them such as Ray's flying ability. The new Encore Mode didn't add much to this game. Just the same Mania Mode stages with different layout and style. When I played it it, I felt I was playing the Mania Mode again. The new partner mechanic is OK, I like how you can switch between your characters. However, it doesn't offer much to it neither. One thing I consider cool is the 4-player mode though, as I mentioned before, it could have a online mode too. I also preferred more the Metal Sonic boss in Stardust Speedway in its previous version than in the new one here. It's just easier and, once again, you don't fight him directly.
To end up, I would have liked if Mania Plus had more than just reusing or adding more to existing features. The only interesting feature for me was the new characters, even though I'm not a fan of Ray and Mighty. I consider this is not enough to release it in physical form. So yes, it's a good game but not one to consider it excellent or that it improved the franchise. Sonic Adventure and 3 & Knuckles are still better than this one.
